Break-In at WatergateOn July 17, 1972, five men were arrested for breaking into and bugging several offices in the Watergate Building of the Democratic National Committee Headquarters. The men's names were James W. McCord Jr., Frank Sturgis, Bernard Virgilio Gonzalez, and Eugenio Martinez, two of whom were former CIA agents. It was later discovered that these men were part of the group known as the "White House Plumbers". Many speculations began that the break-in was one of many plans designed to assist President Nixon in the reelection campaign of 1972. Over time, many people connected to Nixon, his White House Staff, or his campaign, began to quit, were fired, or were charged and tried with crimes. Weeks after Nixon's reelection in 1973, layer after layer of evidence led closer to President Richard Nixon.

"If the many allegations made to this date are true, then the burglars who broke into the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee at the Watergate were, in effect, breaking into the home of every citizen." |
